The station opened on 5 October 1877 by the Girvan and Portpatrick Junction Railway. On the southbound platform was the signal box, which was replaced in 1905. The second platform was added in 1937. To the east was a siding which served a cattle pen. The station closed on 7 February 1882 but reopened nine days later on 16 February 1882.
